The person you engage is the person who does the work.

The person you speak with is the person who scopes, conducts and reports the engagement. There is no handover to a separate delivery team. You work directly with the adviser responsible for the work and its conclusions or recommendations.

Experience behind the advice

Bruce Johnson brings experience in senior executive leadership, governance and consequential risk, supported by formal study and executive education in strategy, leadership and artificial intelligence. His approach combines practical organisational experience with independent, evidence-based judgement.

Executive leadership

Bruce Johnson has held senior executive and leadership roles across the public and private sectors, with responsibility for technology, business operations, strategic planning, risk management and organisational assurance. Having worked in executive teams and extensively with boards, he understands the practical challenges of establishing governance arrangements, making decisions with incomplete information and remaining accountable for the outcomes.

Education and professional development

Bruce has completed the Artificial Intelligence for Business programme through the Harvard Business School Online and the Executive Programme in Strategy and Organisation at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He also holds a Master of International Relations from Victoria University of Wellington and a Certificate in Company Direction from the New Zealand Institute of Directors and has completed the Australia New Zealand School of Government Executive Fellows Programme.

Governance and consequential risk

Bruce's earlier senior public-sector roles included work involving national security, maritime security, risk assessment and advice to Ministers. This experience informs an approach to AI governance that places particular importance on clear accountability, reliable evidence and decisions that can withstand scrutiny.

Independence and boundaries

Ethos Advisory is independent of technology vendors and does not sell or implement AI systems. Its advice focuses on the governance arrangements, accountability and decisions for which boards and executive teams are responsible.

Ethos will not provide independent assurance over governance arrangements it has substantively designed. Management remains responsible for governance, risk and control decisions.
